The Return of Denys Cowan

To quote a well known poet, "don't call it a comeback" (LL Cool J).  Denys Cowan hasn't left the building.  A groundbreaking comic book creator, award winning television producer, husband, father, and my brother/friend , Denys has been working steadily for a hundred years.  However, today 3/21/2012 marks the release of a new ongoing comic book series, 'Dominque Laveau: Voodoo Child', from DC Comics imprint, Vertigo, and I'm very excited for him and anyone into gothic, hip, Louisiana drenched stories coupled with powerful illustrations.  It's comic book gumbo!  Here's the variant cover, illustrated by Denys:

Written by talented former editor of The Source, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, 'Voodoo Child' is a different kind of book, looking at a world seldom, if ever examined by the comic book universe.  No long tights or secret identities, just an engrossing story with compelling characters.  Below is the synopsis from the Vertigo website:

DOMINIQUE LAVEAU: VOODOO CHILD is the story of a half-breed, outcast and heir to the Voodoo Queenship of New Orleans, if she can live long enough to claim her birthright. New Orleans is the most haunted city in America: a town of centuries-old ghosts and newly drowned spirits; where vampires, voodoo spirits and loups-garous make their home. Ruling over this all are the powerful Voodoo Queens, whose influence stretches into politics, business and crime as they maintain a delicate balance between the mortal and supernatural worlds.But in the aftermath of Katrina, all that has changed, for someone or something has murdered the Voodoo Queen and most of her court. The number one suspect is Dominique Laveau, a grad student at Tulane who is about to discover that her entire life has been a lie. Denys has one of the most unique drawing styles of anyone in comics.  Blending his love of European artists, his New York upbringing, a quietly rebellious perspective informed by the likes of Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee, among others, Denys' art jumps off the page.  It's aggressive while being lyrical at the same time.  

One of the founders of Milestone Media, Denys, along with my good friend (and birthday party heckler) Michael Davis, Derek Dingle and the late Dwayne McDuffie, created a line of multi ethnic comic book characters whose impact is still being felt today.

Like most of the great artists that I know, Denys is incredibly self-critical about his work, rarely acknowledging when he's knocked it out of the park, which is often.  Thankfully, he has friends and admirers who pay him no mind in that regard.

This doll was given to me for a complete makeover. The owner was not happy with their original purchase. 

She was previously repainted and had hair added. I refrain from being critical of another artists work because everyone expresses their creativity differently.  I actually felt bad that I had to undo someone's creative expression :( 

however, the customers request prevailed.

This was my first time tackling a doll that was previously made into an OOAK.  I basically had to undo what was already done.

The following are a few of my repaints that left my house so quickly, I was only able to snap a few pics. Usually I like to take my time and do a diorama or photo session. There was little or no time for that LOL

These were created for my sister in law. She wanted
these made for a gift basket for an American Cancer Society function
that she was overseeing. 

I cant even remember if I posted them previously or named them LOL

This doll for a woman who has purchased my dolls
before. I had just completed her and half an hour later
she was at my door to collect LOL
I quickly had to snap a few pics before she left :)

Again, I am not sure if I posted or named her before :)

This doll was done for Frannie of Thrift store dolls.
She is actually still here (waiting to be picked up) However
she lost her outfit LOL. It belonged to another doll that has since
left the building. She still has on her fab earrings though!
The guy is still here  LOL

She is a member of the Chynadolls. She left to be on her own
and went home with Frannie. The remaining members of the Chynadolls
have not yet recovered after her leaving them. They are still waiting
for the arrival of their newest member :(

This was a bride that flew out of my house so fast that I barely had
time to blink LOL. I did manage to get more photos of her and I believe she did
appear in a previous blog :) In case you missed her before, here she is.

Her entire outfit is hand sewn, as well as her headpiece.

This is Susan. She was done for a friend and fellow blogger also
named Susan at Barbie Fantasies :)

This doll was done for my Tax consultant. 

She flew out of the door before I could say tax refund! She did not even get a name
so I have named her Tax Refund LOL

I'm sure I posted this before.  This is Cannon with her date MR GI Joe.
He is a repainted GI Joe who was flocked and given facial hair.
Gone but not forgotten :)

Caution!! Doll Nudity...

Dont even remember naming her (white and black outfit) lol. She left right after she was done and this is one of the few pics I have of her! The other naked doll was done and given as a gift to Frannie :) This is the only pic I have left of her so..... Frannie, post some pics of her LOL
